Although many documents show that marzipan was consumed as early as 1530, \u201cL\u00fcbeck marzipan \u201d was not coined as a quality term in L\u00fcbeck until around 1800. During this time, around 135 marzipan producers (mainly cake shops) in L\u00fcbeck alone dedicated themselves to the task of establishing the good reputation of L\u00fcbeck marzipan. This tradition led to the founding of Verein zum Schutz des Herkunftsgew\u00e4hrzeichenes L\u00fcbecker Marzipan e. V. [Association for the Protection of the L\u00fcbeck Marzipan Guarantee of Origin] in 1974. It initially had eight members. The Marzipan Association is dedicated to preserving and safeguarding the quality and culture of L\u00fcbeck marzipan.<\/p>\n

The designation \u201cL\u00fcbecker Marzipan\u201d is a protected geographical indication (PGI) registered in the EU register and is subject to special quality and production requirements.<\/p>\n

The aim of the Association is to monitor and protect the \u201cL\u00fcbecker Marzipan\u201d mark of origin at home and abroad. Through the name \u201cL\u00fcbecker Marzipan\u201d, the people of L\u00fcbeck not only defined an area (L\u00fcbeck and the neighbouring municipalities of Bad Schwartau and Stockelsdorf), but also introduced quality regulations.<\/p>\n

For other manufacturers in Germany, the name \u201cL\u00fcbecker Marzipan\u201d was a generic term that could be used for their products also \u2013 much to the annoyance of the L\u00fcbeck-based manufacturers. The Association then obtained protection of the term exclusively for the L\u00fcbeck manufacturers through a lawsuit \u2013 not least because an opinion poll had shown that consumers very much expect products named \u201cL\u00fcbecker Marzipan\u201d to be made in L\u00fcbeck.<\/p>\n

The court ruling in favour of the L\u00fcbeck manufacturers was handed down on 26 November 1982. Since that day, only manufacturers based in L\u00fcbeck and the surrounding municipalities \u2013 and even then, only those who submit to the strict quality guidelines of the term \u201cL\u00fcbecker Marzipan\u201d \u2013 are entitled to use this designation for their products.[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”30px”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
